Pendennis Castle looks rather uncared for here at her final shed , 82C (Swindon ) on 28th. July 1963 but was , in fact , not long afterwards selected to work the hardest and initial leg of the high speed Special of 9th. May 1964 from Paddington to Plymouth .
Leading up to that date , and following lengthy evaluation of a number of the remaining " Castles " left in service , 4079 was regarded as being the best of the bunch for that Special , although unfortunately she failed at Westbury on that day with burned firebars in her firebox.
All was not lost , however , as following that failure 4079 was saved from the breaker's yard , privately purchased and restored , went to Australia , came back again , is now undergoing restoration at Didcot and will be back on the main line again hopefully before too long !
With all that history , together with her high speed exploits in Great Western days on the " Cheltenham Flyer " it is no wonder that she's so well loved !
