E2001 1969 Rugby

E2001 1969 Rugby

This is a picture of the former Western Region Gas Turbine locomotive 18100, stated to be at Rugby in 1969 when it was stored out of use there for four years in the Multiple Unit sidings. Converted to an all electric locomotive by its original manufacturers in 1956 and renumbered as E 2001 the former Gas Turbine had undergone testing here at Rugby prior to use as a training locomotive for the crews who would be working the West Coast electric expresses, but its spell of duty in that training capacity was short lived , and it eventually ended its days as a static unit for pantograph evaluation on former Great Eastern metals before it was cut up at Tipton in 1972. The end of a short but chequered lifetime !
