188 1910-12 West Drayton
GWR 4-4-2 No 188 emRob Roy/em has just passed West Drayton with an up express in December 1910.br/ br/ Peter Kerslake says quot;Scottquot; class 4-4-2 number 188 quot;Rob Royquot; shows her quot;Atlanticquot; wheel arrangement to advantage in this view, with the massive rear pony truck clearly visible.br/ Not all the class were named from new, but 188 was named quot;Rob Royquot; in early 1907, a number receiving names from characters in the novels of Sir Walter Scott.br/ Included in the batch of nineteen of her class 188 emerged from Swindon in 1908 and ran in her original form until May of 1912 when, in common with her sister still in service, she was converted at Swindon to 4-6-0 wheel arrangement thereby converting those locomotives to the quot;Saintquot; class and and 188 was accordingly renumbered as 2988 from late December of 1912, the conversions taking between three and six months for each locomotive and keeping Swindon busy between April 1912 and January 1913.br/ This view also clearly shows the sharp drop of the front frame, with the valve head covers on the front face, this locomotive being condemned in May of 1948.quot;br/ Photo: Robert Brookman/Rail Archive Stephenson
