Former Caledonian class 2P 0-4-4T No 55234 stands at Beattock shed together with a pair of Fairburn 2-6-4Ts with No 42180 leading in August 1961. These engines were used for banking trains up the 10-mile 1 in 88 to 1 in 74 climb but the 0-4-4T was only likely to be used in extreme desperation, its usual job most likely being the Moffat branch goods.
