David J Hayes adds "With part of the huge Rail House office block visible in the background, the train is traversing what I believe was then regarded as the "Down Liverpool Independent Line". There were also the Chester and the Manchester Independent Lines, which, like the Liverpool Independent Lines, enabled freight trains to avoid the busy Crewe station area and also gave access to and from Basford Hall Yard (there would've been numerous freight workings of all description converging on Crewe back in the 1970s)".
