9017 1961c Bluebell-ROneg-1512-277

Happily now saved from the breakers' torches following her withdrawal in 1960 little quot; Dukedog quot; 9017 has found a new home on the Bluebell Railway and is seen here looking rather better than she did when condemned the previous year.br/ The class had been constructed by Swindon from 1936 using frames from withdrawn quot; Bulldog quot; locomotives and boilers , cabs and sundry fittings from similarly condemned quot; Duke quot; class engines and they had been designed to work the Cambrian system where weight restrictions on the 121 span Barmouth Bridge in particular limited Swindon to a small but powerful design .br/ As increased loadings of the passenger workings brought about the need for more double heading on the Cambrian lines the little quot; Dukedogs quot; saw their duties being taken over by the more poweful quot; Manor quot; class and with no alternative work being readily available withdrawals saw their numbers reduced with just a handfull left in service in 1960.br/ In 1954 sister engine 9023 was depatched down to Newton Abbot to evaluate the suitability of the class as pilot engines over the steep gradients between that centre and Plymouth , but she was not well received by the footplatemen at Newton Abbot or Plymouth's Laira Depots and the piloting proposals were very soon abandoned
