Ex-North Eastern Railway Raven 'Z' (LNER 'C7') class 4-4-2 No. 2169. Built at Darlington in June 1914 and withdrawn in July 1948 still as LNER No. 2975. The fine and elegant Raven Atlantics were a joy to behold when in full flight as here at Poppleton Junction, York in 1924. The old NER brass numberplate is still on the cabside, not yet having been replaced by the LNER's small and feeble-looking worksplate! The early L&NER insignia is on the tender. I always think the wheel & handle on the smokebox door is more attractive than the later twin handle replacements.
