Class EM1 numbered 26048 on a duty for which the class of fifty seven were primarily intended , namwly working the heavy coal trains on the cross Pennine route via the Woodhaed Tunnel between Manchester and Sheffield Victoria .
The severe gradients encountered on the Trans Pennine route , especially by westbound locomotives on Wentworth Bank , often required a pair of the class to be double headed with a banker or two at the rear when the heavy and lengthy coal trains were the order of the day
