'Matisa' Track machine 1950s south of Duffield
Do you remember when the freight line pegs came off and you expected something exotic, and then a 'track basher' came along? This is exactly what has happened back in the late 1950's south of Duffield Junction, the 'basher' would be very rare back then being the 'first generation' of such machines, a 1949 introduced Matissa Tamping machine, this had vibrating tynes for packing stone under the sleeper being worked on. This only worked on one sleeper at a time and was controlled by a man sitting in a seat right alongside the tynes, all manual control.
