BR 40 1Co-Co1 No D253 with an express looking east from Saddleworth towards Diggle and the Standedge Tunnel in c1961. Behind the locomotive is the distinctive pallet maker's factory of W.H.Shaw that closed in 1967 but following ‘redevelopment' only the clock tower now remains. To the right of the last coach can be seen a signal at Diggle Junction at the start of the now closed (in 1966) Micklehurst loop line to Stalybridge.
