BR 40 1Co-Co1 No D257 with a Liverpool Express leaving Leeds on the ex-L&NWR route towards Huddersfield in c1961. The rear of the train is crossing Gelderd Road with the terraces of Arch Terrace and Arch Road on the left. The route in this photo was the ex LNWR route to allow unhindered exit from Leeds. Opened in 1887 and closed in Oct. 1987 and known as 'The Viaduct Line', this section of line remains in ‘as abandoned’ condition. Proposals to make it an ideal walkway, cycleway into the city centre have constantly been made but never actioned!
