3050 1902c Westbourne Park

3050 1902c Westbourne Park

GWR 3031 class 4-2-2 No 3050 Royal Sovereign, fitted with experimental coil spring bogie, at Westbourne Park shed in c1902. This photo is later than the other photo of 3050 as the lamp sockets have been changed to blades. Note the temp chains holding the spare lamps in place.

Peter Kerslake says "3050 was built in February 1895 as a standard gauge member of its class, originally with a 2-2-2 wheel arrangement. Following an accident in Box Tunnel in September 1893 with 3021 Wigmore Castle, the class were converted during the following year by Swindon to the more stable 4-2-2 wheel configuration.
Royal Sovereign was condemned in December 1915 together with 3074, formerly Princess Helena. They were the last two in service, the first withdrawals having taken place in February 1908."
