71000 1962-10-28 Crewe North
A splendid colour image of 71000 from October , 1962 this being the month prior to " Duke of Gloucester 's " withdrawal from service , following which it was destined to spend five years " in store " here at Crewe.
With a decision in 1967 that this fine engine was not to be preserved , and following removal of both sets of outside cylinders and associated Caprotti valve gear , 71000 was saved from the cutters' torches being purchased from Barry by the 71000 Preservation Group in 1974 .
Fate could , however , have robbed us of this engine's being saved as it was sent , in error , in 1967 from Crewe to Cashmores at Newport from where , had it had not been seen by a former railwayman , it would almost certainly have been cut up .
Hastily despatched thereafter from Cashmores to its intended destination at Woodhams at Barry , where Dai Woodham was fortunately in no great hurry to dispose of is expanding stock of withdrawn locomotives 71000 was eventually saved for preservation.
